CIA's "Bible Lesson on Spying" This CIA study, "A Bible Lesson on Spying," appeared in the Winter 1978 issue of the agency's classified spy journal, Studies in Intelligence. The study reviews the ethical and strategic lessons of spy missions ordered by Moses and Joshua to scope out the "Promised Land." 1977 Senate MKULTRA Hearing In June 1977, a rare cache of MKULTRA documents were discovered, which had escaped destruction by the CIA. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence held a hearing on August 3, 1977, to question CIA officials on the newly-discovered documents. The complete 171-page record is included here, including testimony and dozens of MKULTRA documents on various subprojects. MKULTRA Subproject No. 83 This declassified CIA memo was written on April 18, 1958 by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, chief of the Chemical Division of the agency's Technical Services Staff. Gottlieb, who oversaw many of the MKULTRA projects, reviewed covert CIA support for research studies of "controversial and misunderstood" areas of psychology such as hypnosis, truth drugs, psychic powers and subliminal persuasion. "Operational Assessment of Subliminal Perception" This CIA report was written by Richard Gafford and appeared in the Spring 1958 issue of the agency's classified journal Studies in Intelligence. Declassified in the mid-1990s, the document may be the CIA's first serious assessment of subliminal persuasion. Covert Testing on Human Subjects By Military Intelligence Groups An excerpt from Appendix A of the Select Committee on Intelligence report on "Project MKULTRA, The CIA's Program of Research in Behavioral Modification," issued in 1977. Parapsychology in Intelligence In this declassified document, Dr. Kenneth A. Kress, a CIA paranormal expert, provides a historical overview of the agency's investigation and use of psychic spies. This report, released to the public in 1996, appeared in the Winter 1977 issue of Studies in Intelligence, the CIA's classified internal publication. U.S. Intelligence and "Psychic Spies" A complete transcript of the American Institute for Research's report on remote viewing, prepared at the request of the CIA. Issued 29 September 1995, this report covers the U.S. Government's use of psychics in defense and intelligence efforts over the past two decades. CIA: Hypnosis in Interrogation This study, written by Edward F. Deshere, appeared in the CIA journal Studies in Intelligence in 1960. This document explores some of the possible applications of hypnosis during interrogations.
